Machine Problem Solving

Machine Problem Solving 5.jpg

Use Machine Problem Solving to permanently remove the causes of machine problems and boost machine reliability and performance.

Machine Problem Solving (MPS) drives rapid improvement in equipment reliability and performance. It develops systematic problem-solving capabilities that complement the technical expertise (engineering qualifications & machine-specific know-how) of engineers and technicians and boost existing Total Productive Maintenance (TPM) programs. Developing these skills should be a major focus in the development of engineering and maintenance teams, as they enable technical staff to provide optimal support for line improvement activities led by operations supervisors.

Problem solved

Machine reliability is a major source of output and quality losses experienced by companies in many industries. Machine stops have a significant effect on line stability, capacity requirements and cost. Without stable machine performance, standardised work and stable, predictable process performance cannot be achieved. To achieve world-class line performance, machine problems must be quickly contained, their causes correctly identified and fixed, and the solutions ‘locked in’ to prevent recurrence.

Skills developed

What Machine Problem Solving graduates will be able to do

  • explain how Machine Problem Solving enables the Total Productive Maintenance (TPM) programs in their organisation

  • correctly identify the exact location and nature of a machine problem

  • quickly and effectively contain the problem to restore production quality and flow

  • define and deploy effective countermeasures to fix the true causes of the problem

  • lock in countermeasures to prevent recurrence
